My Love Affair with Raw Cacao

Yes chocolate. By now you know chocolate is good for you. Right. Loaded in antioxidants, and makes us, well happier.

It is true. But I am not talking about just any chocolate. So don’t be running to the store buying up the Hersey Kisses. The majority of mainstream chocolate —bars, chocolate flavoured items, chips and baking goods are loaded with fillers chemicals, sugar, preservatives, wax and who-knows-what else not meant for human consumption. And since so much is added to it, there is very little nutrients left in this chocolate.

There is a better choice. The cacao on it’s own is a nutrient powerhouse. Cacao is derived from Theobroma Cacao beans, which literally means “Food of the Gods.” Cacao contains over 300 compounds including: protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, zinc, copper, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps to build strong bones and is a muscle relaxant associated with feelings of calmness. Cacao is also high in sulfur, which helps form strong nails and hair.

It is the highest antioxidant food in the world. 15 times more antioxidants than blueberries. It is also the #1 food for your heart, has the highest natural source of magnesium, iron, manganese and chromium of any major food group. It is also loaded in phosphorous, zinc and copper.

The best way to make sure you’re getting the real deal is to start with quality raw cacao powder available in at Choices, Whole Foods and other good markets. Look for RAW and ORGANIC. The best powder is dark brown and will taste a little bitter. You can make your own hot beverage by mixing the powder with hot water. Some research has found that mixing dairy with cacao inhibits the absorption of the nutrients. So to get the most health benefits from your cup of cacao, try using a milk substitute such as coconut, almond milk, soy milk or just plain water.

  • Whenever I am feeling a little chocolate, I make a superfood smoothie like the one.
  • But I am absolutely obsessed with my morning ritual which has completely replaced my coffee (by choice).
  • And this dessert is a dinner time hit, and so easy.
  • Check out these amazingly healthy truffles. OMG. I am telling you best thing you ever ate!
